Prompted by AALJ/IFPTE Judicial Council 1, Sen. Gillibrand Requests Information on Closure of White Plains, NY SSA Hearing Office

Last week, the Association of Administrative Law Judges (AALJ/IFPTE Judicial Council 1), notified Senators from New York and Members of the House of Representatives in and around the White Plains, New York, region that the White Plains Social Security Administration (SSA) hearing office had abruptly closed, creating a significant inconvenience and loss of services for residents of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Duchess, Ulster and Sullivan Counties.

In response to the AALJ’s sounding the alarm, Senator Kristen Gillibrand sent a letter to Michelle King, the Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA), seeking information on the decision to close the White Plains hearing office, the impact of the closure, resources need to secure additional sites for SSA hearings in the region, and how SSA will help facilitate hearings for people who now lack dependable access to the next closest hearing office.
