Canadian IFPTE Locals Gather for 4th Annual Manitoba Legislative Conference
The 4th Annual IFPTE Manitoba Legislative Conference brought together union leaders to strategize on legislative advocacy, organizing, and mobilization. TEAM, WAPSO, and the Society attended in person, while SCMMA participated virtually, highlighting the collective strength of IFPTE Locals.
A major focus was legislative action, with discussions on Manitoba’s Bill 37 and its impact on unions. Speakers emphasized the importance of engaging members in advocacy and securing further legislative wins. The conference also underscored the need for strong organizing efforts to sustain the labour movement, equipping Locals with tools to recruit and support new members.
Political challenges were also a key topic, with concerns about Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency and the potential election of Pierre Poilievre in Canada. Speakers stressed the need for vigilance and proactive strategies to protect labour rights amid shifting political landscapes.
Key speakers included Kevin Rebeck (Manitoba Federation of Labour) on legislative gains, Melissa Dvorak (Winnipeg Labour Council) on grassroots mobilization, Stuart Trew (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives) on U.S. trade policies, Kiavash Najafi (Canadian Labour Congress) on lobbying strategies, and Amy Chin-Lai (Nonprofit Professional Employees Union) on successful organizing campaigns.
The conference reinforced the critical role of legislative advocacy in advancing workers' rights and strengthening unions. Participants left with a renewed commitment to mobilizing members, influencing policy, and expanding union representation to ensure lasting protections for workers.
